Disney Circulates Native American $1 Coins

U.S. Mint Circulation Pilot at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom & Epcot

Oct 22, 2009 Debra Peterson

Walt Disney World participates in a circulation pilot of the 2009 U.S. Native American $1 coins to encourage consumers' use of dollar coins instead of paper bills.

Continuing now through December 13, 2009, the Walt Disney World Resort is participating with the U.S. mint in a circulation pilot of 2009 U.S. Native American $1 coins. The program attempts to encourage individuals to use dollar coins, which have a much longer life span than dollar bills.

“Our participation in the circulation pilot is part of a continued commitment to environmentality,” states Thomas Smith, Social Media Director on of Disney Parks, on the official Disney Parks blog. “The coin is an environmentally responsible choice – it’s recyclable and lasts decades longer than paper bills.”

In 2009, the U.S. Mint began issuing $1 coins celebrating important contributions made by Native American tribes and individuals to the development and history of the United States. This policy is in keeping with the Native American $1 Coin Act (Public Law 110-82). The law requires at least 20 percent of all $1 coins minted and issued in any year be Native American coins; the rest are Presidential $1 coins.

Design of 2009 Coin Features Agricultural Theme

The 2009 theme for the coin is “agriculture.” The coins feature a Native American woman planting a field of corns, beans and squash on the reverse, along with the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and $1. The design, by Norman E. Nemeth, is called "Three Sisters Agriculture,” referring to the method of planting these crops together for higher yield. The design highlights Native American agricultural techniques and recognizes European settlers benefited from this shared knowledge.

The obverse of the 2009 coin continues to feature Glenna Goodacre’s “Sacagawea” design, which was first first released in 2000, along with the inscriptions LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST.

I think it's great that Disney is helping get this great idea out there. All we need now is to discontinue printing the paper dollar.
